Why is School Choice Important?
Yes, Georgia passed a school choice bill in 2024, known as the "Georgia Promise Scholarship Act" (SB 233), which will be implemented starting in the 2025-2026 school year. Supporters argue that the program empowers parents to choose the best educational environment for their children, especially those in low-performing schools.
Eligibility: Initially, eligibility was limited to students zoned for public schools in the lowest-performing 25% of the state. However, it has since been expanded to include more students.
Our CD5 Initiative is to reach out to every parent whose child attends an under-performing school to have the opportunity to know their rights. We believe every parent wants the best for their children!

Individualized Attention and Engagement:Smaller class sizes or alternative learning environments like homeschooling or charter schools can provide more personalized attention and cater to the child's specific learning style. This can lead to increased engagement and academic progress. Improved Safety and Wellbeing:Parents may choose to remove their children from schools with safety concerns, bullying issues, or a perceived lack of a positive school culture. Homeschooling or alternative schools can offer a safer and more nurturing environment. Enhanced Socialization: While concerns about socialization can arise with homeschooling, it also offers opportunities for vertical socialization (interaction with people outside the child's age group) and horizontal socialization (interaction with peers). Increased Parental Involvement:Pulling children out of a traditional school can allow parents to take a more active role in their child's education, fostering a stronger parent-child relationship and a sense of partnership with the school. More Rigorous or Specialized Education: Some parents choose private schools or specific educational programs for their children to access a higher level of academic rigor or specialized programs that may not be available in public schools. Addressing Specific Needs:Pulling a child out of school might be necessary to address learning disabilities, behavioral issues, or other special needs that might not be adequately addressed in the current school setting. Personalized Learning Experiences: Homeschooling or other alternative educational models can allow parents to tailor the learning experience to their child's interests, learning style, and pace. well-beingReduced Stress and Anxiety: well-beingFor some children, the pressure and demands of traditional schools can lead to stress and anxiety. Removing them from that environment can improve their mental health and wellbeing.
While we know this is a sensitive and often politically charged topic. It's important to approach it respectfully, especially when discussing how different communities engage in public education or children's programming.
Concerns raised by some parents and advocacy groups about drag performers reading to or teaching children (typically through events like Drag Queen Story Hour) often focus on the following perceived negative effects:
1. Age Appropriateness Concerns argue that drag, as an art form rooted in adult performance and satire, may not be developmentally appropriate for young children. Critics worry that it introduces complex ideas about gender and identity at an age when children are still forming basic social and cognitive understanding.
2. Cultural and Moral Opposition Religious or conservative families believe drag performances conflict with their values around gender, modesty, and family roles.
They may feel such exposure undermines their right to instill moral or spiritual beliefs at home.
3. Confusion About Gender RolesSome argue that children may become confused about gender identity and norms when presented with non-traditional expressions without full context or maturity.
4. Parental RightsA major concern is that parents are not always informed or given the option to opt their children out of such events, leading to tension over transparency in education.
